The Magic of Oxytocin

Oxytocin has an amazing role to play in the human body and can help with a number of things such as helping us to relax and stay calm, reduce stress and anxiety, helps in childbirth and breastfeeding and is the hormone that helps us bond and fall in love.

Oxytocin is produced in the hypothalamus and is secreted into the bloodstream by the posterior pituitary gland. Oxytocin is often referred to as the ‘love hormone’ due to the fact it is released into the body during hugging, touch and orgasm. It is associated with empathy, love, trust and is paramount in relationship building.

When it comes to childbirth oxytocin has a big role to play as it stimulates the uterine muscles to contract and it also increases the production of prostaglandins which increase the contraction further. For some women who don’t go into labour naturally they are given the synthetic form of oxytocin, pitocin.

Oxytocin also plays a big role once baby is born, as it promotes lactation by moving the milk into the breast. As baby suckles, oxytocin is secreted allowing the milk to release for baby, at the same time it is also secreted to the brain.

Oxytocin is the wonderful hormone that enables the mother-baby bond to develop, it helps mothers to accept her baby and meet his needs with love and compassion.

Touch is babies most developed sense at birth being skin to skin and close to you helps to keep them calm, safe and secure, it also enables the release of oxytocin. Babies naturally love being held, rocked, fed and carried which enables attachment, love and bonds to grow.

Baby massage therefore is the perfect opportunity to get that oxytocin flowing and create your own love bubble with your baby.

One of the big benefits of baby massage is that it facilitates bonding through touch, the sound of voice, smell and eye contact, enabling communication between parent and baby. Touch also enables the production of Oxytocin which is commonly referred to as the love hormone as it promotes the feelings of love towards each other. Baby massage encourages therefore positive emotional bonds between parent and baby enabling a secure attachment and relationship from the beginning.

Massaging your baby enables them to feel relaxed and comfortable by lowering the levels of the stress hormone within the babies body. A baby who is relaxed can be seen to feed and sleep much better, a baby who is responded to gently and calmly and has their needs met is also much more likely to cope better with the environment and process information better too.

So enjoy the oxytocin boost with some eye contact, conversations, cuddles and hugs with those you love the most. Create your own love bubble you can’t cuddle too much, it’s good for you!

Much love
